Sarah E Grafton DMD

Dr. Sarah Essek Grafton is the Chair of the Department of Restorative Dentistry and Comprehensive Care at the University of Pittsburgh School of Dental Medicine, where she also serves as Assistant Dean for Clinical Efficiency and Analytics. A graduate of Allegheny College with a Bachelor of Science in Biology, she earned her Doctor of Dental Medicine (DMD) degree from the University of Pittsburgh School of Dental Medicine. She then completed a General Practice Residency at the Department of Veterans Affairs. Dr. Grafton has been a dedicated educator and clinician, focusing on enhancing clinical operations, improving patient care, and mentoring future dental professionals. With a strong background in both private practice and public health settings, Dr. Grafton brings valuable real-world experience to her teaching. She has played a pivotal role in curriculum development, particularly in the areas of professional practice and practice management, ensuring that students are well-prepared for the evolving landscape of dentistry. As a faculty member, she has held numerous leadership positions, including Interim Assistant Dean for Clinical Affairs and Vice Chair for Clinical Efficiency. Her commitment to innovation is reflected in her research and presentations, particularly in the ethical and medical considerations of dental treatment for patients using cannabis. Dr. Grafton is an active member in several professional organizations including American Dental Education Association (ADEA) and the Academy of General Dentistry (AGD). She is a fellow of the ADEA Leadership Institute and completed Advanced Evidence-Based Dentistry training co-sponsored by the American Dental Association and New York University. She has been recognized for her contributions to dental education, including induction into Omicron Kappa Upsilon, the national dental honor society and currently serves as Vice-President of the Beta chapter. Through her research, teaching, and leadership, she continues to shape the future of dental education while advocating for excellence in patient care and clinical efficiency.
