Restorative and Comprehensive Care

The Department of Restorative Dentistry and Comprehensive Care at the University of Pittsburgh School of Dental Medicine is dedicated to supporting the mission of both the University of Pittsburgh and the School of Dental Medicine. The department strives to provide high-quality education, research, service, faculty practice (UDHS), and person-centered care. With a focus on teaching, we offer contemporary, evidence-based didactic, preclinical, and clinical instruction, grounded in the most current literature. The department’s commitment to faculty development and calibration ensures the consistent evaluation of student competence across all areas of restorative and comprehensive care.

Our primary goal is to produce competent, beginning general dentists who are prepared to provide comprehensive care to pediatric and adult patients. Students are trained to develop treatment plans for a wide range of dental care needs, from simple to complex cases. They are assessed through formative and summative evaluations to ensure they meet the highest standards of general dentistry. They will demonstrate professionalism, ethical behavior, and competency in treatment planning, while also being able to identify appropriate referrals when necessary.

Upon graduation, they have built a strong, evidence-based knowledge base and skill set preparing them for general practice, advanced residency programs, or specialty training. Graduates of the program will be equipped with critical thinking skills for patient care, and providing preventive and restorative services to diverse populations. This is a dynamic and exciting time in dentistry and restorative care. We invite you to explore the many innovative opportunities the Department of Restorative Dentistry and Comprehensive Care offers to dental students at the University of Pittsburgh School of Dental Medicine.

The Department of Restorative Dentistry and Comprehensive Care integrates the use of digital workflows with intraoral scanners, ten and 7 milling units, 3D printers, and advanced computer-aided design (CAD) software to collaborate with both in-house and external dental laboratories. These technologies enable the fabrication of dental restorations through conventional or digital workflows in University-compliant portals. Our students gain hands-on experience using digital tools on their patients, guided by comprehensive treatment plans developed in partnership with faculty, ensuring they acquire the essential skills for both treatment and ongoing care programs.
