Biography

Dr. Joe Ambrosino serves as the Director of the Center for Continuing Dental Education at the School of Dental Medicine, and is an Instructor in the Department of Dental Public Health.

Dr. Ambrosino graduated from the University of Pittsburgh School of Dental Medicine in 1980. Following a tour of duty as a Captain and Dental Officer in the US Army at Fort Bragg, NC, he returned to Pittsburgh and practiced general dentistry in the North Hills. While practicing, he earned Fellowship in the Academy of General Dentistry (FAGD), while also completing Masters degrees in Public Management (MPM - concentration in Health Systems Management) and Health Policy and Management (MS) from Carnegie Mellon University’s Heinz School of Public Policy and Management.

Dr. Ambrosino subsequently served as Executive Director of the Southwest Pennsylvania Area Health Education Center (AHEC), a nonprofit organization dedicated to the recruitment and retention of health care providers into underserved communities. During his time with AHEC, Dr. Ambrosino maintained a voluntary faculty appointment with the School of Dental Medicine and was actively involved with dental access issues by:

  • working closely with the School of Dental Medicine to identify and develop rural and urban underserved community-based clinical training sites for dental students.
  • playing an integral role in increasing dental capacity in two underserved urban communities by collaborating with partners to facilitate the opening of dental centers.
  • assisting communities in seeking designation as Dental Health Professional Shortage Areas and in recruiting dentists
  • serving on the Statewide Oral Health Stakeholders Planning Group

In 2014, Dr. Ambrosino accepted a full-time appointment to the University of Pittsburgh School of Dental Medicine. While serving primarily as Director of the Center for Continuing Dental Education, he is also involved with issues related to dental public health and access to care.
